Often in these discussions people get very one-sided in that everything had to have been "groundbreaking" (it wasn't) or a "huge disappointment" (it wasn't) - it had flaws, but it told an interestingly different story. I don't think it's a perfect title by any stretch, but I think it was a wholly worthwhile experience. Most choices really matter to yourself (incl your inner monologue) & those around you, and it is reflected as such. Normally, it would be a stretch to imagine that making a few clear decisions so early on in a video game didn't lead to some drastically different ending, but that would take you out of the experience. The hard opening works wonders for this, your choices only really go so far (affecting the next 2-3 lines of dialogue + artwork at the end), and that's human - most decisions aren't life-changing. It would not work at all as a movie, and relies on the player to fill in their own logical narrative which is helped by the (something of an inner dialogue since for the most part all she does is reinforce what she is hearing you report) walkie conversations. I definitely took a few (long) moments looking around a site before drawing my conclusion about what might have happened. Personally I would say it achieved the goal it set out to do (from my perspective) - which is giving the player a sense of humanity to their actions, questioning what they encounter as they might in that position, and drawing conclusions based on their individual judgment.
